Oh's planned scheme may endanger other defectors
Tuesday, July 13, 2004 22:17:43 Updated.
It is claimed that a Japanese broadcasting company schemed to televise North Korean defectors
running into a foreign diplomatic facility. Oh Young-pil who served 16 months' imprisonment for the
scheme had an exclusive interview with KBS today and presented a proof of monetary transactions
in relation to that case. Won Jong-jin has more.
Oh Young-pill, a 34-year-old video journalist who had been detained in Guang Zhou Prison for 16 months,
finally met his family again. The Chinese police caught him on March 13 the last year. He was on charges of helping
five North Korean defectors run into a foreign consulte in China. However, he was sentenced innocent and released.
At the end of February of the last year, Oh met a Japanese TV reporter in Seoul through the mediation of the representative of a domestic mission society.
The Japanese reporter offered him 1 million yen in advance and promised to additionally pay up to 1.5 million yen in case he succeeds in covering North Korean defectors
taking asylum in any of Japanese facilities. The reporter wanted to have Oh record the scene.
